June 1, summer begins in Russia – 1
In Russia, the calendary summer season begins on the first of June and ends on the 31st of August. Congratulations on the first day of summer! I wish you bright and sunny days, as well as a good mood.
I have collected a few Russian proverbs about summer. What do you think about them?
– «There is no summer twice a year.»
So, let’s enjoy summer to the fullest. How are you going to spend this summer of 2022, dear friends?
– «In summer with a fishing rod, in winter with a handbag.»
Тhis is how in the olden days, Russian country folks liked to spend the seasons. Of course, times having changed, some Russians spend their summers in their dachas (houses in the countryside), then they fly to Dubai for the sun in winter.
Where do you like to travel to, dear friends, in summer or winter?
– «In June, the first berry is put in the mouth, and the second one is carried home.»
Picking berries is a lovely pastime in summer, don’t you agree? What summer berries do you like most, dear friends of mine?
– «What you do not store in summer, you will not fetch in winter.»
«Что летом родится, то зимой пригодится.» – «What is born in summer, will come in handy in winter.«
«Лето собирает, а зима подъедает.» – «Summer gathers, and winter eats up.»
Nowadays, we can buy food all year around in supermarkets. However, someone has gathered and placed it in cans or preserved in glasses, what we eat in winter.
I remember my grandmother’s garden. She used to pick berries in summer and prepare wonderful jellies and jams, which we ate in winter. Do you have such memories too, dear friends?
– «Fear the wolf in winter, and flies in summer.»
Not that there are too many wolves around any more but flies in summer can still be a pest, especially near the water.
What do you fear most in summer or winter, dear friends? I will be happy to read your answers. Thank you.

In this part of Chile, we are entering winter and it looks like it is going to be very cold. We are waking up at 0 degrees when it was fall time last year. Unlike Venezuela (Isla de Margarita) it had summer all year round. This year I plan to visit Chilean Antarctica and Easter Island, which were closed for two years due to quarantine. Very good your post Olivia. The photos are great.

Thank you for your comment, Manuel. Chile is the other side of the world, winter beginning in Chile, summer beginning in Russia. Our summer begins quite cool here, in Moscow, with 14 degrees. At least it is not raining today!
Please tell us about your trips to Chilean Antartica and the Easter Island on your blog, when you get there – with photos, so we can see where you are.
All the best to you. Keep warm.

I hope this time I can do it. Greetings Olivia.

Wow! Wow! Wow! Such a beautiful, lovely and inspiring post! Dear Olivia, you are amazing!
I love all the berries and enjoy preparing jams. I am so happy to start June. I feel that it brings us a lot of blessings and great things!. Thank you for your kindness and for sharing. Have a wonderful day!

So you like preparing jams with berries, too? My grandmother did a lot of that. She prepared glasses of jam all summer long, and even in autumn. We had different fruits in glasses to eat during the winter. That was delicious.
Wishing you a wonderful day too, dear Elvira.

Yes, exactly, dear Olivia.
It’s very relaxing. I love berries jam.
I can imagine your grandmother must be amazing. Delicious home jam! Thanks for sharing it with me.
Wishing you a wonderful day too, dear Olivia. Nice day! 🫖☕🥐🍯🍒

Yes, my grandmother was amazing. She had a big garden with fruit trees, vegetables and flowers. I often helped her in the garden as a child. 🫖☕🥐🍯🍒

True, dear Elvira. It was like a dream to see my grandmother’s garden. I remember the apple and pear trees, cherry trees, abricot, peach and plum trees. She also had hedges with black currant and raspberries, as well as a few rows of strawberries, which I helped to pick.

Wow! So inspiring! I love cherry, apple, pear, peach, strawberries, blackberries, all of them! Such a nice experience!
Thank you, dear Olivia for sharing!
Lovely day!

The sun is shining in Moscow this morning, what a promising beginning for the summer in Russia. Now I need to get ready for school. I will go to another Russian class later ….

Great dear Olivia! Enjoy your sunny day! Good day at school!
I am going to sleep! See you later.

Good night, dear Elvira, sleep well.
The sun is still shining, 20 degrees Celsius outside. So I put on a T-shirt with short sleeves, the first this summer.

Here it is, a tango!
Thanks, dear Olivia!
I love summer, so I enjoyed reading plenty of proverbs and information.
I wonder why summer begins on the 1st of June, here we celebrate on the 21st of June with the solstice.
My favorite berries are cranberries.
I love thinking of your granny preparing jams, I suppose they were delicious!
My grandmother also kept summer fruits and vegetables for the winter in various ways.
Foods like this also have the good taste of affection.
Me gustaLe gusta a 2 personas
Yes, Claudia, affection for grandmothers makes their jams twice as delicious. «Made with love»!
There will be more tangos coming, I adore Russian tango.
Russia is always ahead with its seasonal calendar, I do no know why: 1st of June is the beginning of summer, 1st of September is the beginning of autumn, this is the date when the new school year starts. First of December is the beginning of winter and 1st of March the beginning of spring. Especially in the North of Russia, around Murmansk, Arkhangelsk, and even further North, in the Russian Arctic. They have ice and snow during the season of spring. Not one flower, not one!
Me gustaLe gusta a 2 personas
There are even two tangos by Vertinsky, Claudia: «Banana-Lemon in Singapore» is a tango, and «Palestine Tango» is another one. Tangos were very popular in the USSR, in the 1920s and 1930s. I love this oldie music.
Me gustaLe gusta a 2 personas
Ice in Spring is something that I never considered.
Day 1st is easier to remember for sure.
When I was a child first day of school was 1st of October.
But after few years things changed and now it is around the 8th of September but it depends from the area: in the south school starts later.
Me gustaLe gusta a 1 persona
I really THANK YOU!
I have a lot to discover about 20s and 30s music!
Me gustaLe gusta a 1 persona
The Mediterranean countries do not know ice in spring, not even in winter mostly, unless they have mountains: the Alps, Abruzzi, Pyrenees, etc. Even in Moscow, ice in spring is a regular feature. March can be icey, even April, sometimes.

It is interesting music, Claudia. I like it.

Your post Is really delicious… in both languages. Here in Italy summer begins on June 21th; now the temperature is warm, today 26°. In Summer I like the sea, I am going to spend some days of my next holidays in Sardegna. Not only on the beach, but even on a historical and artistic tour (and eno-gastronomic, of course). The fruit of summer, for me, is a yellow mellon (with ham, and crisp bread…)
Me gustaLe gusta a 1 persona
That is wonderful, Giorgio. I have been to the island of Capri but never to Sardegna yet. I also like melons, the honey melon (yellow) and the water melon (red). Today, we had 20 degrees in Moscow, in the afternoon. It was the first really good and sunny day after three weeks of intermittent rain.
Thank you for your answers. I appreciate your comment. Keep well.

In recent times here we only see a few snowflakes that don’t even remain.

I just searched for Italian songs from the 20’s and 30’s and I realized I don’t know them! I definitely have to remedy this!

I can send you tons of snow from Moscow, if you want some, Claudia. Not now, of course, but this coming winter.
Me gustaLe gusta a 2 personas
Maybe Italians did not like tango so much as Russians did?
Me gustaLe gusta a 2 personas
The snow is beautiful but here we are not prepared and when a lot of snow falls it becomes complicated: there are not enough means to clean the roads, prevent ice etc.
Me gustaLe gusta a 1 persona
I think so.
We are not much into tango, I suppose.
Me gustaLe gusta a 1 persona
Yes, I have seen the same in the south of France, Claudia. The people are not used to snow.
Me gustaLe gusta a 2 personas
Tango was born in Argentina, South America. I suppose Italians have their own dances?
Me gustaLe gusta a 2 personas
Ah so we are not only disorganized in Italy … what a pity though!

Grazia.❣❣❣

In Russia summer starts on the 1st of June because Russia is different from the European Union. We have our own calendar and traditions, our own history and views on life.
In Moscow it is warm now, around 20 degrees, but not too hot.
Shalom! Have a good weekend.

Our Australia winter begins on 1 June. It’s already too cold for me.
Me gustaLe gusta a 1 persona
So Russia and Australia are antipodes: 1st of June summer begins in Russia, winter begins in Australia. How many degrees have you got now, Peggy?
Me gustaLe gusta a 2 personas
It will be 1°C overnight tonight and 0°C tomorrow night. It’s not horribly cold, but our houses are not well heated or well insulated. It makes a big difference.
Me gustaLe gusta a 1 persona
This is very cold, Peggy. I did not know that temperatures go so low in Australia. Could you insulate your homes better?
Me gustaLe gusta a 2 personas
Our home is reasonably well insulated but many older homes are not and are hard or expensive to change.
Me gustaLe gusta a 1 persona
Were the winters warmer in earlier years, or why are many houses not well isolated?
