Fyodor Tyutchev: Summer 1854 – Федор Тютчев: Лето 1854

Fyodor Tyutchev:

Summer 1854

What a summer, what a summer!
Yes, it’s just witchcraft –
And how, I ask, was it given to us
So for no reason at all?

I look with anxious eyes
At this brilliance, at this light.
Are they mocking us?
From where do we get such a greeting?

Alas, isn’t it the young
Smile of female lips and eyes,
Not admiring, not seducing,
In old age it only confuses us!

  2. Thank you, dear Elvira. I am glad you like this post. Yes, the King of Russian Tango! I get nostalgic when I hear this music.

It is very early in the morning, five 0’clock in Moscow. The sun is not up yet, I hope it will shine.

Meanwhile, I am drinking my first cup of coffee with cinnamon. The first is always the best.

I wish you also a very good Sunday and am sending you a hug from Moscow.

I had no idea that you might like tango. It is such an «Argentine» folklore and that it can transcend to Russia, it is incredible. I enjoyed reading you and the videos are great. Happy week, Olivia.

  9. Ha, maybe I will take another nap now. Strangely enough, I can sleep well after coffee. How about you, dear Elvira?

  10. I love tango, Manuel. Have always loved it and will continue loving it. So did many Russians, in the 1920s, 1930s, 1940s. As you know, there was a strong bond between the Soviet Union and Latin American countries. The Soviets loved Argentine tango and developed their own version of it. Wishing you a good Sunday.

Poetry, dance… these black eyes captured the attention. I did not know that tango was danced in Russia. But I must free my mind by stereotips: tango=Argentina… All over the world people dance and love tango, really. And people love poetry, and dance, and black eyes too…

  19. Black eyes, blue eyes, green eyes – so many lovely eyes in this world! Thank you for your interesting comment, Giorgio. Indeed, tango is loved worldwide. It has a rhythm that is hard to resist. The feet start dancing all by themselves.

  33. Please have a look at the last stanza of the poem, Claudia:

    Увы, не так ли молодая
    Улыбка женских уст и глаз,
    Не восхищая, не прельщая,
    Под старость лишь смущает нас!

    Alas, isn’t it the young
Smile of female lips and eyes,
    Not admiring, not seducing,
In old age it only confuses us!

This is the last stanza of Tyutchev’s poem, in which he says that the beautiful smiles and eyes of young women are not for him any more. He is old and confused by them.

    Le gusta a 2 personas

  34. Even my old age confused me …;)
    THANKS Olivia!

The smile of the eyes, however, is among the most beautiful things that can exist in my opinion!

    Le gusta a 1 persona

  35. Yes, Claudia, the smile of eyes are lovely. I certainly agree with you.

In the case of Fyodor Tyutchev, he probably resents that he cannot play the charming Casanova any more, as he did in his youth. Those smiling eyes seem to be mocking him. And judging by his portrait, he certainly was not a goodlooking man.

Isn’t it true that some men think or try to believe that they are irresistible until their last days in life? Maybe their wealth or power is irresistible, their personal charisma certainly is not. Just think of Monsieur Berlusconi, to give you an example of modern times. The old satyr just married a pretty young woman at the age of his granddaughters (if he has any). LOL

    Le gusta a 2 personas

  36. Here is Olivia: with the example you gave me, now everything is very clear to me.
    You are right.
I find Berlusconi’s reports after his second divorce absolutely sad.
Power really blinds: there are things money can never buy.
And when people only surround you for your money the result can only be bleak loneliness, in my opinion.

    Le gusta a 1 persona

  37. Does the old satyr Berlusconi still hold his «bunga bunga» parties? I suppose this is a sort of euphemism for «sexual orgies»? Well, he will need a lot of viagra to keep pace with young, exciting women.

This won’t be his last divorce, Claudia. You mark my word, there will be more divorces, if he does not croak soon.

    Le gusta a 1 persona

  68. Have you ever thought of making a collection of your proverbs in a little book?

    Le gusta a 1 persona

  69. The old lechers probably think that lechery is a sort of wisdom of their own. It depends on how we define wisdom, Claudia.

    Le gusta a 2 personas

  70. No, I have not thought about it yet, Claudia. I have been busy collecting Russian proverbs in the course of my Russian studies, though.

    Le gusta a 2 personas

  71. Here, my view of wisdom is completely different.

    Le gusta a 1 persona

  72. Good! Then it might be an idea to combine your proverbs with Russian proverbs.

    Le gusta a 1 persona

  73. Mine too is completely different, Claudia. I believe that female wisdom in general is different to that of men.

    Le gusta a 2 personas

  74. This is surely a good idea, Claudia. At the moment the project is on standby, due to lack of time.

    Le gusta a 2 personas

  75. Eh! In fact, on many strands of thought there are differences between men and women.

    Le gusta a 1 persona

  76. The right time will come.
Maybe just to seal the end of your Russian language course.

    Le gusta a 1 persona

  77. Almost on all strands of thought female and male views are different for sure.

    Le gusta a 2 personas

  78. The Russian language courses are a never ending programme, I am afraid Claudia. Right now I am working towards the B2 exam, which will allow me to obtain permanent residence in Russia. Afterwards there will be the S1 exam and the S2 exam, this is the highest exam certifying that I can speak (nearly) as good as a native speaker. This is needed by people who want to apply for a Russian passport.

Normally! Of course there are differences! If your name is Gérard Dépardieu and if you possess millions, then you will be given a passport by the Russian President, without speaking a single word of Russian, or utmost 5 to 6 words. You will also be given an apartment in Grozny for free by the ruler of Chechnya, although you might not need such gifts, if you are a millionaire ….

And what is best: Gérard Dépardieu is not showing up in Russia any more, since he received his Russian passport. He is simply using it to avoid being taxed in France.

    Le gusta a 2 personas

  79. My husband and I often joke about this, about our differences, yet in the end we make up for it.

    Le gusta a 1 persona

  80. Oh wow! I had no idea that it was so strictly necessary to know the language perfectly to have a residence permit and then a passport.
Regarding the differences between ordinary people and people of «power» I am honestly fed up with many, too many, too many times I have been disappointed.
Not to mention taxes and justice …

    Le gusta a 1 persona

  81. This is great, if you and Massimo can joke about it, instead of quarreling. I believe that quarrels between husband and wife are useless and destructive. Those differences between female and male wisdom are innate, they will always exist.

    Le gusta a 2 personas

  82. How true! Those exceptions that are made for rich and powerful people are truly revolting. Let’s not even discuss it. This is a wide field or a deep morast, whichever way you want to phrase it.
