I just read an interesting article in the Russian «Spletnik» (a society maganize) about the Boris Godunov Gala at the Scala. Here is an excerpt, translated into English:
December 7 … at the La Scala Opera in Milano the new season was opened with Modest Mussorgsky’s opera «Boris Godunov». The premiere was held on a grand scale: many influential people and politicians appeared among the guests …
Most of the roles are sung by Russians. The main parts are performed by Ildar Abdrazakov, Anna Denisova and Alexei Markov from the Mariinsky Theater in Saint Petersburg, soloist Dmitry Golovnin and others also take part in the performance.
After the end of the performance, the audience applauded for 13 minutes, Ildar Abdrazakov received a separate ovation.
As the Scala’s director Mattarella noted, «Russian culture cannot be ‘cancelled’, it is an integral part of European culture.»
Even the head of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, admitted that she loves Russian opera. “Mussorgsky is phenomenal, Tchaikovsky is also phenomenal. We must respect Russian culture,” TASS quotes her.
La Scala opposed the «cancellation» of Russian culture.
